How To Fix PS5 Faulty Power Supply
Now we have seen some symptoms, let’s take a look at how we can actually fix a faulty PS5 PSU.
Basic Checks
Before drawing any conclusions, try to restart or reset your console.
This is the simplest fix you can try and sometimes works well!
Unplug your console from the power source, wait for a few minutes, and plug it back in to see if it resolves the issue.
You can also try Safe Mode operations like rebuilding the database or restoring the default settings of your console
Check External Elements
At times, the problem isn’t actually the power supply at all, but the external elements including your power wall socket, power cable, or any power supply protectors.
Inspect and make sure that all these external factors are working fine.
Always try another power cable first.
Examine the Console
Try a thorough visual inspection of your console to see if there are any burnt smells or visible scorch marks around the power port on the rear of the PS5
Check the ventilation as well and remove any dirt or debris obstructing adequate ventilation.
Check For Software Updates
This might sound a strange way to fix power issues on your PS5, but belive it or not, a software update can resolve certain power issues on a PS5.
This is because a Sony Software update might include system configuration updates of known power issues.
Check that the PS5 firmware is up to date following these steps:
Step 1 – Go to Settings and select System.
Step 2 – Choose System Software and then Console Information.
Step 3 – Check the system software version. If it says “Up to date”, you have the latest version installed.
This way you can benefit from Sony’s recent fixes and improvements that can sometimes address issues related to the power.
Replace the PS5 Supply Unit
If nothing else works for you and the problem persists, maybe it’s time to get your power supply replaced.
You can ask for a professional’s help or you can do it yourself by following the steps below.
Note: This process is technical and should only be performed by a competent person. NEVER try to open a power supply unit to fix it as it contains dangerous high voltages which could cause harm.
Step 1 – Disconnect all cables and remove the side panels to open the console, and undo the screws around the console. Then remove the black outer housing.
Step 2 – Remove the internal heatshield, motherboard and heatsink.
Step 3 – Remove the PSU from the console carefully.
Step 4 – Remove the faulty PSU and install a new PSU by reversing the removal steps. Make sure that all the connections are done correctly and the PSU is seated properly.
Final Thoughts
The PlayStation 5 is a very complex machine, and stable power is key for the smooth running of internal circuits. A faulty power supply can throw up errors and issues that at first glance might seem unrelated so it is always best to start your diagnostics from the power supply and work backwards.
